چکیده

We provide a detailed comparison of the two-dimensional, temporal and spatiotemporal linearized analyses viscoelastic free shear flows in limit low to moderate Reynolds number Elasticity obeying four different types stress-strain constitutive equations: Oldroyd-B, Upper Convected Maxwell, Johnson-Segalman (JS) linear Phan-Thien Tanner (PTT). The resulting fourth-order Orr-Sommerfeld Equation is transformed into set six auxiliary equations that are numerically integrated via Compound Matrix Method. stability analysis suggest (a) elastic stabilization at higher values elasticity number, (b) non-monotonic instability pattern intermediate for JS as well PTT model. To comprehend effect elasticity, viscosity on curves model, we consider fourth parameter, centerline rate, $\zeta_c$. `JS behaviour' recovered below critical value $\zeta_c$ above this base stresses (relative model) attenuated thereby explaining stabilizing influence elasticity. Briggs idea analytic continuation deployed classify regions stability, absolute convective instabilities, evanescent modes, results compared with previously conducted experiments Newtonian past cylinder. phase diagrams reveal two familiar inertial turbulence modified by (a recently substantiated) region elastoinertial unfamiliar temporally stable number.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of multiple shear-banding events for viscoelastic micellar fluids in cone-plate shearing flows

We characterize the transient response of semi-dilute wormlike micellar solutions under an imposed steady shear flow in a cone-plate geometry. By combining conventional rheometry with 2-D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), we can simultaneously couple the temporal stress response with time-resolved velocimetric measurements. By imposing a well defined shear history protocol, consisting of a step...

Global linear stability analysis of weakly non-parallel shear flows

The global linear stability of incompressible, two-dimensional shear flows is investigated under the assumptions that far-field pressure feedback between distant points in the flow field is negligible and that the basic flow is only weakly nonparallel, i.e. that its streamwise development is slow on the scale of a typical instability wavelength. This implies the general study of the temporal ev...

Zonal Shear Flows with a Free Surface: Hamiltonian Formulation and Linear and Nonlinear Stability

General theoretical results via a Hamiltonian formulation are developed for zonal shear flows with the inclusion of the vortex stretching effect of the deformed free surface. These results include a generalization of the Flierl-Stern-Whitehead zero angular momentum theorem for localized nonlinear structures (on or off the β-plane), and sufficient conditions for linear and nonlinear stability in...

Stability of Shear Flows of Viscoelastic Fluids under Perturbations Perpendicular to the Plane of Flow

Over the past twenty years there has been considerable interest in the question of whether shear flows of viscoelastic fluids can be unstable when the Reynolds number is low but the Weissenberg number is high. Two obvious sources of instability are when there is a maximum in the shear stress function or when the equations of motion lose evolutionarity [l]. These instabilities can be regarded as...

The Stability of Viscoelastic Creeping Plane Shear Flows with Viscous Heating

− The two-dimensional linear stability of creeping plane Couette and Poiseuille flow of a viscoelastic fluid with viscous heating is investigated using a Galerkin-type Chebyshev collocation approach and a non-isothermal formulation of the FENE-P constitutive model. Viscous heating is observed to have a destabilizing/stabilizing tendency for Couette/Poiseuille flow at long to moderate disturbanc...
